Clogged drains pipes can cause your blood to boil

You might notice the stopped drainage when you are in shower and suddenly the water level starts rising up. A choked drain pipe is in action. What about that wet sinking feeling when you are brushing your teeth at the washbasin on a lousy Monday morning and the filled sink just refuses to drainpipe!. The prospect of sorting choked drains out is not a happy one; it can be messy and time consuming. However it is something that every household has to deal with, sooner or later. The best course of action for you is to be prepared to deal with it by learning how to unclog bathroom drainage.

Why do drains get stopped?.

They get choked when dust, hair and other particles get entrapped between the pipes inside the bathroom drainpipe. The condition gets worse when products like conditioners, shampoos and detergents accumulate in the already blocked drainage. When the accumulation reaches a level of thickness that constrains the free movement of water, the problem is pointed out as blocked drain. So, if you are finding the water isn’t flowing freely through your drain pipe resulting in water rising quickly in your bath or sink chances are that you have a blockage in your plumbing system.

How do you unblock your drains?.

If you want your water to start running freely then there are a few things you can do to rectify the problem. Whether you are working with a sink or a bath drain pipe, the first step to take is to remove the stopper. Look beneath the sink, you may have to remove a nut that secures the stopper or in some cases you can just directly pull out the stopper by the u-bend. For a bathtub you may be able to simply take out the plug, otherwise you might have to take off the overflow plate in order to get at the assembly.

The accumulated matter clogging up your drain pipe may be clearly visible when you have taken off the stopper. Those greasy lumps of entangled hair and residue can be seen sticking to the sides and corners of the drain pipe. Try to get hold of the mass and pull it out. If it is difficult to reach the area where the blockage is located, or difficult to grasp the mass, simply use a bent wire clothes hanger to help you do the job. Clearing out the hair, soap scum and particles could very well take care of the problem for you.

However other methods can be used in case the blockage is unreachable even with a hanger. A very useful tool is a drain plunger which can eradicate those blockages that are too deep to reach. To begin with, you should plug the overflow drain pipe to make sure that the plunger has optimum suction. Now put the plunger over the drainpipe and move it up and down continuously at an even pace. If you are successful, any water, if trapped, will be instantly drained when the plunger is released.

Even the plunger may not clear the most dense and hardened matter inside your plumbing system – that’s when you will have to deploy a chemical drain clearing product. Chemicals used in these cleaners are poisonous and are to be used only when all else fails as they can affect your sanitary fixtures and pose a health risk.

You can always take professional help if this concerns you.

If the above methods fail to solve your stopped drain problem then you may have to contact a plumber. Professional plumbers will have specialist equipment and know-how to unblock your drain pipe in next to no time. Though it won’t come cheaply, an experienced plumber’s help can provide peace of mind.
