What are causes of blocking of drains?.

Not paying proper attention is a primary reason for clogged drains. To prevent your kitchen drain from getting clogged, the drain strainer should be used regularly to pull off the food particles from the drain. This is important because these particles can accumulate over a period of time and lead to clogged drains. The worst thing that leads to increased clogging of the drain is the accumulation of cooking oil or grease. Now coming to the toilet, the main problem is that many individuals try to flush large amounts of used toilet papers into the drain.

They also flush some items that are not meant for the toilet and this leads to clogging as well. Certainly, items like paper towels, sanitary napkins and baby wipes individually or as a group can cause a blockage in due course. Hairs that are trapped in the drain pipes can result in clogging of bathroom sinks, showers and bath tubs. Items such as shampoos, soaps, toothpaste, hair gel, exacerbate the problem as they produce a build up that further adds to the blockage.

Unfortunately, clogs can occur as a result of problems that have nothing to do with what you put into your drains. Pipes can rust over time, roots can make their way in and drains can be damaged externally – all these can also jam up your drainage.

There are a number of rectification methods for a drain clog.

You can use certain acids and chemicals which are especially meant for clearing the clogged drains. As a matter of fact using these chemicals can have an adverse effect on your fixtures, pipes, your health and the environment. Fortunately, more natural methods for clearing clogged drains also exist. Regularly running boiling water through the drains is one of these methods. Another method employs baking soda and vinegar. Household vinegar is run down the blocked drain; next, cover the drain liberally with soda bicarbonate. Allow the mixture to settle in the drains for minimum of 15 minutes, pouring boiling water and rinsing it afterward is likely to remove the blockages.

The easiest maintenance method is to keep inspecting your drain pipes regularly and prevent problems rather than facing a problem later.

The plumbing system works in the same manner as your car or any other machine. A periodic checkup and maintenance schedule can keep your drains running smoothly. As you are most familiar with the behavior of your drains, be vigilant regarding what is going on with your drains and pipes and perform some of the examination yourself. If you want to get rid of all the drainage problems and associated expenses, all you need to do is have an experienced plumber to check your drains regularly. As a preventative measure, you should also have a plumbing technician snake all of your drain lines once a year or so. In case of frequent blockages your pipes and drains are vulnerable, inspect the drain lines quite often to get early warning. CCTV surveillance should be employed every now and again for important pipe connections.
